Hannah, the daughter of Amos and Dorcas Hitchcock, was the wife of Joseph (1743-1810) Howell,
probably married in 1770. They had eleven children. Most of them died young. Hannah was described as “amiable” on her gravestone Quite a feat after bearing eleven children! After Hannah’s death, Joseph married Sarah Hall and had seven more children.
My own research shows that Hannah was born on December 31, 1748, and was married to Joseph Howell on April 22, 1766, at age 17. (Church records show that she was officially admitted as a member to First Church of Christ, New Haven — Center Church — on April 26, 1772.) Her husband Joseph appears to have been named one of the original fire wardens of New Haven when its first fire department was founded in 1789.
Hannah’s epitaph indicates that her tombstone is also meant as a memorial to four of her infant children who predeceased her:
